Terminated pregnancy

Treatment can be done either medically or surgically - it depends on the size of the foetus.

We confirm your pregnancy with ultrasound and in some cases blood tests. We will then advise you on medical treatment, which will be carried out at our clinic. If the size of the foetus is over 9 weeks or you want a surgical curettage, we will refer you to the hospital.

Facts and FAQ

Early miscarriage/early pregnancy is often caused by chromosomal defects in the foetus (60-70%). Unfortunately, it is not always possible to determine the cause in each individual case. For the vast majority, there is no increased risk of recurrence in a later pregnancy.

Patient guide

A missed abortion means that the pregnancy has ended but the body has not yet expelled the pregnancy tissue and you may not have experienced symptoms such as bleeding or pain. The foetus is not viable, but pregnancy hormones may remain high so the body “thinks” the pregnancy is continuing.

It is often caused by errors in foetal development, such as chromosomal defects or the foetus not being able to develop properly. It's very common, and it's usually not due to anything you've done or failed to do.

There are not always symptoms. Some people find that the pregnancy symptoms disappear. Others only experience bleeding and pain when the pregnancy tissue starts to be expelled. Many don't realise it until an early ultrasound scan.

Pending treatment: The body has time to expel the pregnancy tissue itself
Medical treatment: With medication that causes the uterus to contract
Surgical treatment: For example. curettage under anaesthesia. The choice depends on your situation and your wishes.
