In a cone incision, a small cone-shaped section of the cervical mucosa where the tumours are located is removed. This is usually done with a thin electric loop (loop diathermy). The procedure takes 10-15 minutes and can be performed under local anaesthetic.

The removed tissue is sent for analysis to ensure that all cell changes have been removed. Most people can resume daily activities quickly, but should avoid tampons, intercourse and swimming pools for 2-4 weeks to ensure good wound healing.

A cone incision is recommended for moderate or severe cell changes to remove the area where the changes are located and prevent the development of cancer.

It's often performed under local anaesthetic, so you only feel pressure or slight discomfort. Some may feel menstrual-like pain afterwards.

The procedure itself typically takes 10-15 minutes and you can almost always go home shortly afterwards.

Avoid sexual intercourse, tampons, swimming pool, spa and tubs for 2-4 weeks.

Light bleeding or spotting for 1-3 weeks is normal. Heavy bleeding or fever requires contacting a doctor.

Most people can get pregnant and give birth normally.

You should call the clinic 8-10 days after the procedure.

Some people experience cell changes again. It is therefore important to follow check-ups and screening programmes.
