Approximately 1-2 % of all women experience three or more pregnancy losses. Most can get pregnant again with a good prognosis when causes are recognised and treated correctly.

The causes can be anatomical conditions, hormonal imbalances, genetic causes, autoimmune conditions or coincidences. An ultrasound and water scan (HSU) or hysteroscopy can identify conditions in the uterine cavity that can be treated.

The examination includes an interview, blood tests, ultrasound and assessment of the uterine cavity with a water scan (HSU) or hysteroscopy. The method makes polyps, muscle nodules, adhesions or septums visible. Read more about hysteroscopy and IUI-H.

Facts and FAQ

Uterine changes are found in up to 10-15 % of women with recurrent losses. Polyps, muscle nodules and adhesions can be treated and improve the chances of a successful pregnancy. Many achieve a normal pregnancy after investigation and possible correction.

Yes - the risk of miscarriage increases with age. You should therefore be referred before the age of 40.
