Did you know?

An IUD is a safe form of contraception that can be inserted and removed quickly by a gynaecologist - often in minutes and without sick leave.

More information

You can choose between a hormonal IUD and a copper IUD. The choice depends on your needs, bleeding pattern and whether you want hormones or not.

Spiral

The copper IUD is 98% safe and the hormonal IUD is 99% safe as contraception.

During insertion, the IUD is passed through the vagina and cervix and placed in the uterus. We place a local anaesthetic in the cervix. For removal, it is pulled out via the strings. If the strings are not visible, the IUD is removed with special forceps.

Facts and FAQ

After IUD insertion, you may experience light bleeding and discomfort for a few days. Avoid tampons, bathing and sexual intercourse until the bleeding stops. You can have a check-up scan after 3 months, and we recommend that you regularly feel the IUD cord.

Patient guideSpiral types

You can have the IUD inserted at the end of your period.

There may be some brief discomfort or pressure during the procedure, but it only takes a few minutes. IUD removal is typically not painful.

It depends on your wants and needs. Copper IUDs are hormone-free. Hormone IUDs can cause less bleeding and less menstrual pain.

The copper affects sperm movement and the lining of the uterus, making it difficult to get pregnant.

The hormone makes the mucous membrane thin and the mucus in the cervix tough so that sperm cannot pass through.

The copper IUD can last for 5 years. The hormonal IUD can last 3, 5 or 8 years depending on the type.
