Pregnancy scan
The scan is done with ultrasound and is usually done vaginally to give the best and earliest picture of the pregnancy.
You can see if the pregnancy is in the womb, measure the length of the foetus to determine the due date, confirm heartbeat and assess whether there is one or more foetuses. Sometimes a blood test that measures the pregnancy hormone hCG is added to assess the progress.
Facts and FAQ
An early scan cannot show if the foetus has any genetic diseases, malformations or gender. These conditions can only be assessed later in pregnancy with specific tests and scans.

A scan can usually be performed from week 5-6, at which time a gestational sac can often be seen and later a yolk sac or heart action.
Early structures are very small, and a vaginal scan provides the most detailed and safe image. It is a gentle examination and lasts a few minutes.
A scan can show positive signs such as correct positioning and heart action, but no scan can guarantee the outcome.
No, you can't. First trimester scans cannot tell the sex of the foetus or detect malformations. Such assessments are made later in pregnancy.
If the expected length of pregnancy is not yet visible, it may be due to early dating. A follow-up scan is often recommended after 1-2 weeks for clarification.
