Did you know?

First trimester bleeding occurs in up to 25 % of pregnant women. Half will have a healthy baby. On ultrasound, where you see a live foetus in the womb, around 90 % end up with a healthy baby.

More information

Ultrasound can be used to monitor the pregnancy early on: the foetal sac is seen around 5 weeks, the yolk sac at around 5+4, and heart action is usually seen from around 6+0, when development is normal.

Bleeding in early pregnancy

Early pregnancy bleeding can be caused by threatened miscarriage, spontaneous or missed abortion, or an ectopic pregnancy.

For bleeding in early pregnancy, an ultrasound scan is often performed to see if the pregnancy is in the womb and developing normally. The scan is done through the vagina. Sometimes a blood test that measures the pregnancy hormone hCG is added to assess the progress.

Facts and FAQ

Treatment for early pregnancy bleeding depends on the cause. Progesterone can help some women with early miscarriages. Relief and bed rest have no proven effect. Further treatment in the clinic depends on the findings.
